On this afternoon, the on-duty crew was toned out to respond to Stoneville Pond for a report of a child unconscious in the water. Rescue 1 and Ambulance 1 arrived on-scene to find a 5 year old drowning victim, and the victim's father reported missing. Auburn Police Officers, who were the first to arrive on scene, recovered the child and immediately began CPR. The child was than immediately rushed by Ambulance 1 to the UMass Memorial - University Campus Pediatric Emergency Dept. The Rescue and Ambulance crews began aggressive advanced life support on the way, but unfortunately, the victim did not survive. The Dive Team was also immediately activated to search for the missing father, who was reported by witnesses to have been seen struggling in the water. Due to high heat, and extremely difficult diving conditions, mutual aid was requested from the Worcester Fire, Webster Rescue, and the Muddy Brook CT Dive Teams. The Worcester Sheriffs Dept., MA DFS Incident Rehab Unit, and the Leicester and Charlton Fire Dept's. also assisted. The search lasted approximately 24 hours. The father was eventually found, and it was determined he drowned attempting to save his son. One diver was seriously injured during the recovery effort.
